National Grid -- one of the UK's 50 largest companies -- builds, owns and operates electricity and telecommunications networks around the world. One of the world's largest providers of energy networks, National Grid operates or is building electricity transmission networks and interconnectors in England and Wales, the US, Argentina, Zambia and Australia..
In England and Wales, National Grid owns, maintains and operates the high-voltage transmission network on a minute by minute basis, ensuring supply is balanced with demand for electricity. More information on National Grid is available at www.nationalgrid.com
"National
Grid has used the Dendronic Learning Engine (DLE) in a prototype system to forecast
the England and Wales demand for electrical power for the day ahead. So far
special days such as public holidays have been excluded, but results are
promising and work continues. The company has tried other machine learning
systems (such as neural nets), but the DLE has consistently given significantly
more accurate results than these. In
addition the DLE trained much more quickly (minutes not hours) and in a far more
straightforward, reliable and controllable fashion, producing internally
analyzable models. It has also
proven easy to integrate the DLE with Microsoft Office products to make the
prototype user-friendly. Technical
support from Dendronic has been second
to none."
